Sweden’s favourite duo, Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson, have long been loved for their sharp humour, irreverent charm and unmistakable warmth – whether on screen, behind the mic or in front of a live audience. Now, they bring that same energy to the big screen with The Last Journey — a heartfelt and hilarious road movie that became a box office sensation in Sweden, and is now set to charm audiences across the UK and Ireland from 20 June.
The film follows Filip, his 80-year-old father Lars, and close friend and co-director Fredrik on a heartfelt journey through the South of France. It began, not as a film, but as a personal mission: “The movie didn’t even start out as a movie,” Fredrik explains, “but rather a rescue mission where Filip simply wanted to revive his old, depressed father by taking him on a trip.”
What unfolded became something bigger — a story about connection, growing older and how even the smallest lives can contain something epic. As Filip recalls: “We knew we had this asset: my dad. We felt he’s this small, everyday hero, and there are lots of them in the world. I live in the US now, so when people started asking, ‘What are you doing?’ I told them, ‘I’m doing a film about my dad.’ They’d ask, ‘Was he the prime minister? A famous writer?’ And I’d say, ‘No, he was a teacher.’ But we’re treating him as if he was Churchill.”
What makes The Last Journey so special is its blend of humour and heart.
