Following the bold, avant-garde designs explored in the exhibition Swedish Fashion: Exploring a New Identity (2009), this talk and discussion explores new Swedish design talent that challenges the stereotypical picture of Scandinavian fashion as blonde, functional and minimal.
Timed to coincide with the international fashion week season, guests will enjoy a private view of Thea Porter 70s Bohemian Chic followed by a talk from Dr Philip Warkander and highlights of the Swedish designs showcased at London Fashion Week AW15 (20–24 February 2015).
The contemporary Swedish fashion scene is in a state of transition. Swedish fashion has established an international reputation through its minimalist, functional and understated designs. However a new generation of designers and brands is emerging, exploring more experimental and avant-garde silhouettes and shapes, making the definition of Swedish style more complex and less easy to define. This development places Swedish fashion more firmly in an international context as interconnections with other creative disciplines are becoming increasingly important.
This talk will outline this progression, pointing out key factors and important events, in order to not only understand Swedish fashion in its contemporary context, but also to discuss how it may evolve in the future.
Philip Warkander is Senior Lecturer in Fashion Studies at Stockholm University and Lund University. In May 2013, he became the first person in the world to complete a PhD in the newly established academic discipline Fashion Studies at the University of Stockholm. Based primarily in Paris, Philip Warkander also works as a fashion writer, as well as collaborating with institutions such as the Röhsska Museum for Arts, Crafts, Design and Fashion in Gothenburg, Bonniers Konsthall, Sven-Harry’s Art Museum in Stockholm and Institut Suédois in Paris.
